Fairfield Osborn Preserve: Site 5 Autumn 2022- Seasonal Cascade in Oak Woodland

Small ridges cup us as we stand near a seasonal cascade in an oak woodland. This cascade tumbles down the rocky slope during the Osborn Preserve’s cool, wet winters, but dries up completely within a few days after the rain stops. In the woodland, acorns and California Bay Laurel fruits provide a rich source of food for a diversity of animals. The extent of oak woodlands on Sonoma Mountain results from intensive pre-colonial land tending, including cultural burning.
