Finca Las Piedras Field Station: Site 1 Spring 2026 – Amazonian Tropical Rainforest

Here we are immersed in an open tropical rainforest in Madre de Dios, Peru. This forest features a semi-open canopy with variable understory density, allowing sunlight to reach the forest floor. Mature trees, palms, lianas, and regenerating seedlings shape the vegetation structure, while natural animal trails reveal frequent wildlife movement. Seasonal rainfall, treefall gaps, and rapid nutrient cycling drive the dynamics of this highly biodiverse Amazonian ecosystem.
