Pierce Cedar Creek Institute: Site 1 Winter 2021 – Tallgrass Prairie

Welcome to a recreated tallgrass prairie in Southwest Michigan, dominated by native warm season grasses and wildflowers. This particular site was previously a fallow field that was restored to prairie to provide habitat for grassland birds among other wildlife. Prairies, such as this one, are maintained with frequent, prescribed fire to reduce encroaching woody vegetation and stimulate native plants. Half of this prairie received prescribed fire in November 2021, while the other half was left unburned. This provides a comparison between management strategies and enables pollinators and wildlife to recolonize the fresh regrowth of the burned unit. You also can view Pierce Cedar Creek Institute’s Visitor Center overlooking the prairie.
