Here we are on the campus of the University of Lynchburg with a view of College Lake, an urban freshwater lake created in 1934 when Blackwater Creek was impounded with an earthen dam. The lake was over 40 acres in size when it was first created, but decades of sedimentation have reduced it to about 14 acres. Starting in early 2023, the dam will be removed, and we will observe significant changes at this site as Blackwater Creek is restored as a meandering channel through the old lakebed.
