Brackenridge Field: Site 1 Winter 2025 – Lab Riparian Zone

Brackenridge Field Lab is an ecological research station located in the heart of downtown Austin, TX. Viewers can gain insights into the urban-wildlife interface that exists and observe the riparian community as it exists in the mild Texas winters. Upstream lies a spring emerging from Edwards limestone seeps. Downstream, the backflow from a lake created by dam on the Lower Colorado river can be seen. The area experienced a catastrophic flood event from a dam break in 1900, which sent a 120 ft wall of water and silt downstream to the field site. On the bluffs surrounding the creek, subsequent erosion has exposed the profile of this deposit, allowing viewers to see the magnitude of the volume of soil that was deposited during that event.
