Here we are on the banks of the South Fork of the Merced River near the historic Swinging Bridge in Yosemite National Park. The exposed bedrock belies the glacial history of this drainage. Although the surrounding mixed conifer and oak forest was once fire-adapted, decades of fire suppression and removal of indigenous ignition sources have changed the structure and function of this forest.
