Baruch Marine Field Lab: Site 3 Autumn 2022 – Longleaf Pine Restoration Site

This site was clearcut about 2015. Prior to that it was mixed loblolly pine and hardwood. After cutting, it was fenced and left fallow for 2 years, with an herbicide treatment in year one to control herbaceous growth. It was planted with longleaf pine plugs about 2017. You can see the longleaf pines in the videos. They are the pines with very long needles. Short needled pines are loblolly. Ground vegetation is now managed by controlled burns, but so far fire does not carry well on the site because ground vegetation is not continuous. You can see a meteorological gas flux research tower in the distance, toward the west. This is part of the AmeriFlux system. The stand is fenced to keep feral hogs out. They dig up young longleaf pines and eat
