Topic: The Western Flyer Rises Again: The Iconic Vessel of Steinbeck and Ricketts Fame
The Western Flyer is an iconic vessel, chartered by John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts for their 1940 trip to Gulf of California. Steinbeck memorialized that trip in his book “The Log from the Sea of Cortez.” After that trip, the Western Flyer participated in many California Current and Alaska fisheries. As with many long-serving wooden vessels, it met its demise and ultimately sank at the dock in Puget Sound. Recently, the Western Flyer Foundation (WFF) took possession of the derelict vessel and is rebuilding her from the keel up. Here, I share this story of revival and the potential for educational opportunities available – I’ll introduce the WFF’s Education Director — as the Western Flyer plies the waters of the west coast once again.
