HMSC RESEARCH SEMINAR- Thursday, December 16, 2021
SPEAKER: Andi Stephens, Northwest Fisheries Science Center, NOAA located at the Hatfield Marine Science Center
TOPIC: A Study of Radioactive Fish Ears or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
ABSTRACT: Age validation has long been recognized as critical to the assessment process. It is analogous to calibrating scientific instruments. Imprecision occurs when multiple reads report different ages, and bias is a systematic under- or over-estimation; these are confounded in aging lab settings. Imprecision in terms of between-reader variability can be quantified and addressed, for example using age-error matrices in stock assessment models. Bias can only be uncovered by an age-validation study. I will discuss these issues and present several examples of recent work.
