Baruch Marine Field Lab: Site 4 Spring 2022- Mature Longleaf Pine Stand

This is a mature longleaf pine stand on Hobcaw Barony just south of US route 17. This site is protected from tree harvest as part of a red-cockaded woodpecker (RCW) habitat and there is an active colony of nesting RCW in the stand. Nesting trees are noted with white bands around the trunks. We consider this stand to be mature, but not old-growth. All of the stands in Hobcaw Barony have been cut at least once since European settlement in the 1730s. Most have been cut multiple times. Understory vegetation growth is managed by controlled burns when possible, however smoke management on US 17 makes this difficult and so recent management has included mechanical thinning of understory vegetation.
