This grassland is bisected by the highest-elevation trail on the Osborn Preserve. The cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers of the preserve’s Mediterranean climate support rare and endemic grassland species, including deep-rooted perennial grasses that can survive for centuries. The extent of grasslands on Sonoma Mountain results from intensive pre-colonial land management, including cultural burning.
