We stand on the shore of a seasonal pond in an Osborn Preserve oak woodland. The cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers of the preserve’s Mediterranean climate cause significant seasonal variation in water levels, with seasonal water sources drying up completely during the summer months. Ephemeral ponds such as this one serve as critical habitat for rare amphibian species.
