You are standing on a road in the village of Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island, Ohio in Lake Erie. Gibraltar Island to the north (the small, vegetated island to the north) protects the bay from northern winds, providing a natural harbor for fishing boats. Both islands survived the retreat and advance of glaciation in the last ice age because of they are composed of hard dolomitic limestone bedrock. Terwiligers “Pond” to the south of the bridge is a natural backwater of the bay that supports rare fish species, such as the Blackchin Shiner, and recreationally important species, such as Largemouth Bass and Yellow Perch. The pond and bay support abundant waterfowl such as Mallards, Buffleheads, Teal, and Geese, which can be seen in the video.
