KU Field Station: Site 1 Spring 2024 – Remnant Prairie

Welcome to the Rockefeller Prairie Experimental Tract. The area that you see is remnant tallgrass prairie in the ecotone region between the eastern extent of prairie and the western extent of deciduous forest in what is now northeastern Kansas. This prairie is maintained through a disturbance regime of fire and occasional haying to remove litter accumation. Soils in this area are considered highly erodible, however, prairie plants have deep roots that stabilize the soil and sequester carbon belowground.
