KU Field Station: Site 2 Spring 2024 – Reconstructed Prairie

Welcome to the Rockefeller Prairie Experimental Tract. The area that you see is reconstructed tallgrass prairie in what is now northeastern Kansas. This prairie was plowed in the late 1800s through the early 1900s and used for homestead agricultural production. The area was removed from agriculture in the 1950s and reseeded and maintained with experimental treatments as a hay field (vegetation cut and removed; west view) and an area maintained as a mowed field (vegetation cut but not removed; east view). the ecotone region between the eastern extent of prairie and the western extent of deciduous forest.
