The Meet a Scientist initiative is a series of interviews with scientists representing a range of fields and disciplines in the natural sciences and beyond. The interviews are a part of the Pathways in Ecological Research (PiER) mentoring program at Lacawac Sanctuary Biological Field Station and Environmental Education Center in Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania. PiER focuses on providing high-achieving high school students with rigorous field and laboratory experiences. Meet the Scientist interviews feature scientists from many different jobs and with a variety of career paths. They chat about what got them interested in science, their academic journey, and what advice they have for students interested in STEM careers. In this interview, a Science Leader at a pharmaceutical company describes how her innate curiosity led her to a career in cell and gene therapy and drives her evolving interest in lake ecology and preservation.
