Here we are immersed within a recently burned area of mixed conifer and oak forest in the central Sierra Nevada of California. This forest burned in 2022 during the Washburn Fire, which was the first time this forest burned in many decades. Pre-European settlement, this forest would have burned every 6-12 years through a combination of indigenous and lightning ignitions. A small ephemeral stream crosses through the forest.
