Fairfield Osborn Preserve: Site 3 Winter 2021 – Seasonal Stream in Oak Woodland

The canopy overhead dapples us with shade near a seasonal stream in an oak woodland. During the northern California summer, ephemeral streams dry up completely, but acorns and California Bay Laurel fruits provide a rich source of food for a diversity of animals. The extent of oak woodlands on Sonoma Mountain results from intensive pre-colonial land tending, including cultural burning.
